ENDANA SECONDARY SCHOOL SANITATION PROJECT

E N D A N A ,  K E N Y A

EWB at UCI partnered with the Endana community in Kenya. Our project focused around the Endana Secondary School and the surrounding community, which is comprised of several different villages.

In the summer of 2010, a team traveled to Kenya and performed a technical assessment at the secondary school and a large community health assessment, interviewing households in over five different villages. Key issues determined by the community health assessment included

• Latrines and Basic Sanitation/Hygiene
• Water Quality and Rainwater Collection
• Wood Burning Stoves and Indoor Air Quality

In July 2011, EWB at UCI returned to Endana and worked with the Endana Secondary School to build two VIP latrines as well as two hand washing stations. Our public health and education team also worked with the students to create the Sanitation Movement Committee, a group of student leaders dedicating to promoting health and sanitation education within their community. The student group visits schools and other groups in their community and is also in charge of maintaining the latrines and hand washing stations at the school.

Since our implementation trip, we have been in regular contact with the school and the committee through email and with the help of the Orange County Professional Chapter, who is working on a project in a nearby area of Kenya. We are happy to say that the school was able to build a third latrine soon after we departed, and that the Sanitation Movement Committee has been able to visit other schools and neighboring communities.
